Description:

Glycerol monolaurate is a common food additive, belonging to nonionic surfactants, formed by the esterification of lauric acid and glycerol. It has properties such as emulsification, anti-corrosion and antibacterial, and is widely used in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. It can enhance product stability and extend the shelf life. In terms of safety, international institutions generally recognize its safety within the scope of fair use.

The chemical structure of glycerol monolaurate is that one hydroxyl group of glycerol is bound to lauric acid (a C12 fatty acid), while the other two hydroxyl groups remain in a free state. This structure makes it both hydrophilic and lipophilic, making it suitable as an emulsifier. It can be extracted through the hydrolysis of coconut oil from natural sources or prepared through industrial synthesis.

 

Applications:

Food industry: Emulsification: Used in ice cream, cream, baked goods, etc., to improve texture and prevent oil and moisture.
Anti-corrosion and antibacterial: It has inhibitory effects on some bacteria and molds and is often used in meat products, dairy products and condiments.
Thickening and stabilizing: Helps maintain a uniform state in beverages and sauces.
Cosmetics: As an emulsifier or emollient, it is used in products such as lotions and creams to enhance the blending of ingredients and skin absorption.
Medicine and Feed: It is used in sustained-release drug preparations or animal feed additives to enhance the efficiency of nutrient absorption
