Description:

It also known as mercaptoethane, ethyl thiosulfate, or thioethanol, has the chemical formula CH3CH2SH. Molecular weight 62.13. Colorless transparent oily liquid with a strong persistent pungent garlic odor. Easy to evaporate in the air. Slightly soluble in water, with a solubility of 1.5% (weight ratio) at 20 ℃, easily soluble in alkaline water and organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. Highly reactive in nature, easily oxidized to produce ethyl disulfide. At high concentrations, it has anesthetic properties and can cause mucosal inflammation. It should be stored tightly in a cold place. It exists in the urine of rabbits after consuming cabbage and can also be produced during the fermentation of alcohol. Ethyl mercaptan is known for its strong, persistent, and pungent garlic odor. It is the most odorous substance recorded in the 2000 edition of the Guinness World Records. When the air contains only 50 billionth of ethyl mercaptan (0.00019mg/L), its odor can be smelled. It is usually used as an odor indicator by adding gas or other substances. When inhaled in large quantities, it can cause difficulty breathing, lower blood pressure, and symptoms such as vomiting and throat discomfort.

Applications:

It is an important pesticide intermediate used in the production of organic phosphorus pesticides such as isopropylphosphorus, methylphosphorus,

ethylphosphorus, internally absorbed phosphorus, methyl internally absorbed phosphorus,etc.

It can also be used to produce antibacterial agent 401.

The concentration of ethyl mercaptan in the air is only 50 parts per billion, and its odor can be detected.

Therefore, it can be used as a warning agent for natural gas and petroleum gas, and as an odorant for reagents

(its odor can be smelled at a concentration of 0.00019mg/L).
